Unit of competency details

Unit Descriptor 

This unit covers the competency required to install sensors as directed by the operational plan in order to detect targets and to provide information to a remote control facility.

The operator will work as part of a team and will be under supervision.

Application of the Unit 

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

1. Prepare for operation 

1.1 Purpose and requirement of the surveillance activity is received from written or verbal instructions issued by supervisor

1.2 Specifications of the tasks are confirmed and where necessary clarified with supervisor

1.3 Surveillance equipment  required for the task is identified and selected

1.4 Surveillance equipment is checked for serviceability in accordance with standard procedures 

2. Prepare and maintain a location 

2.1 Designated position is occupied, reference points are established and information is documented

2.2 Surveillance equipment is deployed in accordance with supervisor's directions and standard procedures

2.3 Optimal configuration  is confirmed with supervisor

2.4 Equipment is tested to ensure functionality and is confirmed with the control facility

2.5 Site is camouflaged

2.6 Communications are maintained with stakeholders

2.7 Operational maintenance  is conducted as required

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit 

Assessment must confirm the ability to interpret directions from supervisors; and to select the appropriate configuration and location, and the physical installation and maintenance of remote sensors to maximise the desired coverage of hostile areas.

Consistency in performance 

Competency should be demonstrated on deployment of equipment in a number of different environments.

Context of and specific resources for assessment 

Context of assessment 

Competency should be assessed in an operational or simulated operational environment. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features.

Specific resources for assessment 

Access to appropriate surveillance equipment and an appropriate field site.

Guidance information for assessment 

Information that will assist or guide assessment will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.
